For several days, GameSpot News has been covering the apparent demise of SubSpace in the US. The rumored last day of SubSpace, Oct. 31, has now come and gone, and the servers are still chugging away. In the midst of tracking down the future of SubSpace, we found SubSpace's designer and producer, Rod Humble, working at his own company, Harmless Games, with some of the original SubSpace team.

　　Harmless Games began last December as Jeff Petersen (SubSpace's lead programmer), Juan Sanchez (SubSpace's artist), and Rod Humble left Virgin Interactive to start their own business. Since the company's inception, the crew has been working on an unnamed online title that Humble thinks will cheer up current SubSpace players.

　　While Harmless Games promises to divulge more details about its first game by year's end, Humble would only say that the unnamed title "will be Internet only like SubSpace, with support for even more people per level, and will feature a brand-new comms engine."

　　The comms engine focuses on a faster packet system to help reduce multiplayer lags and some new player-communication abilities. One of the new communication options in the game will allow gamers to message one another. Harmless is also working on putting a serverless peer-to-peer voice system into the game. Players would be able to talk to one another during head-to-head matches or talk to other members on their teams to help set up calculated attacks.

　　Harmless Games is currently dealing with several publishers and says that once it has a deal inked, more information will be released. So while SubSpace's future is uncertain, SubSpace gamers may have something to look forward to in the coming year.
