We caught up with eMAGIN, a newcomer to the gaming world. The company brought its Z800 3D Visor for the PC to the show. The Z800 3D Visor is capable of tracking head motion and presenting images in 3D stereovision. eMAGIN has a long history of supplying the military with visual technology for urban operations and night-vision optics. The company also supplies monocular versions of its products to the military.
eMAGIN's Z800 3D Visor supports resolutions up to 800x600 via its OLED displays. The OLED optics are capable of rendering more than 16 million different colors, with exceedingly low refresh rates. An eMAGIN spokesperson mentioned that the Z800 3D Visor has refresh rates that range in the nanoseconds, as opposed to the millisecond range most LCDs are measured in. eMAGIN claims the Z800 3D Visor outputs the equivalent of a 105-inch screen at 12 feet.
The visor also supports head-movement tracking, which is adjustable via the drivers. The unit also comes with built-in head-tracking software. This feature lets you turn your head to view different parts of the screen without the use of an external device, like a mouse. While playing Half-Life 2, we tilted our heads up, and the glasses moved our field of vision to the sky. The Z800 3D Visor can track 360 degrees of horizontal motion, as well as 60 degrees of vertical motion.
Weighing less than 8 ounces, the visor also contains earbud speakers, but the units we tried out didn’t have a set in them. Our experiences with the visor were quite pleasant. We tried the unit out in Half-Life 2 and came away rather impressed at the Z800 3D Visor's ability to both transfer motion and minimize tearing and blurring.
Because the unit uses OLED displays, its power requirements are quite minimal. The Z800 3D Visor is fully functional with the use of a simple USB cable. Its low power requirements make it a boon to those on the move. Laptop users will have the ability to view private documents, watch movies, or play games in complete privacy while on a plane or at a café.
With a list price of $899, the Z800 3D Visor won't come cheaply. eMAGIN says the unit should be available through its retail site and at select outlets this June. eMAGIN also has plans to release less capable versions of its visor at lower price points later this year. Next year, eMAGIN hopes to release a version of the visor that will run at a resolution of 1280x1024.
