In the span of three goals, U.S. interest in the 2006 World Cup went from somewhere around lukewarm to sub-zero, thanks to a humiliating defeat for the American team at the hands (and feet) of the Czech Republic. The parallels between Team Donovan's embarassing loss and the whupping I suffered at the hands of GS UK last week certainly aren't lost to me. Even "better" news for the Americans, they've got another group opponent Italy--another Cup contender--later this week.
U.S. coach Bruce Arena should probably send a thank you note along with the get well flowers for Ben Roethlisberger; who today became another in a long line of pro athletes injured while riding a motorcycle without proper protection. After all, now that the attention of the U.S. sporting world is focused on Big Ben's playing future, nobody's going to care when the Americans get rolled by Team Italy.
So what are the longer odds: the U.S. team making it to the finals or Big Ben starting Game 1 of the 2006 NFL season?
