Todd Howard is known for his work at Bethesda Game Studios on role-playing games, including the soon-to-be-released Starfield, but the developer's most-played game of all time is something totally different.
He told BAFTA in a new video interview (below) that his most-played game ever is the NCAA Football series. "My most-played game of all time, believe it or not, is probably the American football series. NCAA Football is a game I've probably put more hours into than any other game series," he said.
Before this, Howard told Lex Fridman that NCAA Football 14--which was the final entry in the series--is the best sports game of all time. He also spoke about the difficulty that sports game developers face. "When you have to recreate something that's real--say it's cars or sports games--everybody knows how it should work. That's a really difficult task," he said.
Also in the BAFTA interview, Howard unsurprisingly singled out the college football video game series as the one he most wants to see come back. As it happens, EA is reviving its college football franchise, but it won't be called NCAA Football and the game could still be some time off.
Howard said the fact that college football games have been away for so long made him realize how special it was.
The BAFTA interview touches on a number of other subjects, too. Howard said he's excited for the sequel to Skyrim. "Someone should make a sequel to Skyrim. They should. Someone should get on that," he said.
Bethesda Game Studios is now developing The Elder Scrolls 6, so it is happening. The game is no longer in pre-production and is now in development.
Howard also revealed that his favorite game of all time is Ultima 7, an RPG that he said inspired the work that Bethesda Game Studios is known for. The best game of all time? Howard said it's Tetris, which he described as "the perfect video game."
Starfield becomes playable today, August 31, for people who buy the $100 Premium edition or those who purchase the $35 upgrade. Anyone hoping to take advantage of the $1 Game Pass trial offer is out of luck, as Microsoft quietly erased the offer just ahead of Starfield's release.
Starfield reviews will begin to appear on the internet at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET today, August 31, and the game will be playable starting today at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. The game's standard edition unlocks on September 6.
In other news, Microsoft has said Starfield is "critically important" to Xbox Game Pass. For more, check out GameSpot's Starfield preorder guide.
