Fils-Amie opens fire on the competition
Fils-Amie opens fire on the competition-May 2024
May 5, 2025 8:40 AM

With slowing Wii sales, a recent set of disappointing financials, and increased competition from Sony, Microsoft, and Apple, Nintendo has plenty to be worried about in the run up to Christmas. Apple is now making its move in the gaming space, describing its iPod Touch as "superior" to Nintendo's DS, currently the market leader in handhelds by some margin.

What can I say. We're awesome.

Nintendo of America's CEO, Reggie Fils-Aime, seems unfazed by Apple's push into gaming. Speaking to the Washington Post, he proclaimed, "The DS, with its dual screens, offers an experience that cannot be replicated on a smartphone," citing Scribblenauts as a "fabulous experience that can only be brought to life on the DS. All of these experiences are very unique and very different and what you cannot find on their App Store."

As well as Apple, Reggie also spoke to the Post on the launch of Sony's new PSP Go. "I have the utmost respect for all our competitors," he said, "but it's interesting to try and answer the consumer question of 'What's in it for me?' in that product." He further described the handheld as having a "fundamental concept problem" and questioned the benefit of a download-only system.
