At Monday's 1999 Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California, Computer Gaming World unveiled Version 2.0 of its 3D GameGauge.
3D GameGauge is an indication of a game's 3D performance. The gauge's performance standard will be set by gathering frame rate data from Madden '99, Unreal, Motorhead, Descent 3, Half-Life and a flight simulator to be chosen later, running at 1024x768x16, triple-buffered. Image quality is evaluated in each game as well by looking at specific features to see how well they are rendered.
"Version 2.0 is a significant departure from version 1.0 in that we'll be taking an average rather than the sum of the frame rates. We decided that this approach makes more sense because the final 3D GameGauge score better indicates typical performance across the different test-games," saidComputer Gaming World technical editor Dave Salvator.
New 3D games, graphics cards and systems will be compared to this gauge as part of Computer Gaming World's reviews.
Interested players can download game patches needed to run 3D GameGauge 2.0 from the magazine's Web site. Full versions of all the test games will be needed to run the application, however.
