Dota 2 set the record for concurrent players in a single Steam game last night when 653,867 players logged in concurrently to try the new features in the Three Spirits patch that was released in the afternoon. At the time there were more people playing Dota 2 than the next ten most popular titles combined.
Dota 2 has held the concurrent player record since March, when it beat The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim's release day record of 287,000 players. Since then it has continued to up itself every few months as big moments in Dota occur.
