Xbox Live launch event in Japan
Xbox Live launch event in Japan-May 2024
May 10, 2025 1:07 PM

Microsoft officially launched its Xbox Live gaming service in Japan today at Velfarre, one of the most popular clubs in Roppongi, Tokyo. Microsoft invited software developers, members of the press, and fans who beta-tested the Xbox Live service to the event.

The guests were entertained by game kiosks hooked up for online play, souvenir collectathons, raffles (with prizes such as Tekki and a special-edition all-white Xbox console), and celebrity appearances from RCT, an all-girl Japanese pop band, and professional baseball players who happen to be Xbox fans.

Sega's Yuji Naka made an appearance and was met with wild applause from the Phantasy Star Online fans who were in attendance. Amusement Vision's Toshihiro Nagoshi also went on stage and confirmed that his group is working hard on SpikeOut Live. Last but not least, Capcom's Atsuhi Inaba expressed his intention to create a version of Tekki (Steel Battalion) with Xbox Live support that would feature large-scale team-based warfare.
