videogames.com Rewind-April 2024
Apr 30, 2025 9:43 PM

Wow, is the week over already? What a rush - a Final Fantasy Movie teaser, Gran Turismo 2 screens, a new Dreamcast boxing game from Midway, Nintendo announces Super Smash Brothers for the N64 in the US, and all the news from Milia! So without further ado, let's jump into it.

Footage of Square's Final Fantasy The Movie "teaser" leaked out onto the Net this week. You may have heard how amazing the CG is (and may have seen still pictures of it), but nothing compares to seeing it in motion. We definitely have some good stuff to look forward to. Unfortunately the movie won't be out until 2001, but click the link below and you'll get an early look.

Sony formally announced Gran Turismo 2 this week, releasing a handful of shots to showcase parts of the upcoming game. From the looks of it, these are mostly replay views, but it gives you an idea of the new cars (out of over 400) and tracks.

Will the Dreamcast be able to play DVDs in the future? Currently speculation seems to indicate that Sega is taking a rather PC-approach to the system, possibly making it much more expandable than any previous console system. Question is, will this be a good idea in the long run, or will it just confuse the market and consumers? Nothing of this is official yet, so check out our story.

GameSpot News' reporters are on the scene at Milia Games in Cannes, France, rubbing elbows with some of the biggest forces in the PC and console gaming industry. Plenty of news has been coming out of the show daily, so much that we've devoted an entire page to the exposition.

Nintendo revised its first half of '99 release schedule late in the week to include a new Pokemon game, new shades of the Game Boy Color systems, and Super Smash Bros.

Midway announced its first official US Dreamcast launch title this week, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, and released a few screens of it too. It looks like a cross between a real boxing sim and a cartoony Super Punch-Out-type boxing game. Either way, the US Dreamcast launch is getting better and better.

Rumors in Japan state that SaGa Frontier 2 will be released on April 1 and includes a demo of a certain long-awaited sequel. What is it? Is it true? Click on our story to find out.

Reflections, the developer of Driver (a car chase game in the true spirit of '70s TV shows), was present at Milia Games. We stopped to chat with Reflections and grab the latest screenshots from the game.

It seems that the chances of Soul Hackers, one of Atlus' Megami Tensei RPGs, may not make it here after all, due to a rejection from Sony's testers, despite widespread fan support for the game.

Could it be that SNK and Capcom have finally teamed up to bring their most popular characters together on the field of battle? Not so, say the American subsidiaries of the two companies. But there's still hope as rumors persist from Japan that such a game may indeed see the light of day.

Finally, did Todd McFarlane really buy the McGwire record-setting home run ball? The answer is yes, all US$3 million of it.

Phew! Big week. There's more great news from GameSpot News this week than we could fit into this edition of the Rewind, so check back through the console archive to get all the latest console news. Have a great weekend!
