May 4, 2025 1:45 AM

The latest trailer for the upcoming crime thriller Uncut Gems has arrived, and one thing about it is exceptionally surprising: Adam Sandler has some serious dramatic acting chops. While the movie doesn't arrive in theaters until Christmas, the new trailer gives us a good idea of what to except.

Uncut Gems--which releases on Christmas Day this year--follows Howard Ratner, a jewelry dealer and store owner in the financial district of New York City, primarily dealing with both famous and rich customers. However, he has to make ends meet when merchandise is stolen from his top seller and girlfriend. Check out the trailer above.

Now Playing: Uncut Gems (2019) - Official Trailer | Adam Sandler

The movie stars Sandler alongside Idina Menzel, Julia Fox, and celebrities like Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd. Reviews for the upcoming movie and Sandler's performance have been glowing thus far, receiving an 88 on Metacritic--GameSpot's sister site.

In his review of Uncut Gems, GameSpot's Rafael Motamayor said, "Uncut Gems is an endurance test. It's a thrill ride that wants you to see how long you can keep watching an irritating man make stupid decisions before pulling all of the hair off your head. And the Safdie brothers aren’t interested in paying this off with a calm, rewarding finale. This is Howard’s world, and it is a cruel place that punishes those who try to pull one over on it."

Sandler is no stranger to dramatic roles, with his most notable being 2007's Reign Over Me or Paul Thomas Anderson's 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love, but the comedic actor doesn't often take on roles like this often. More recently, the actor has been making movies with Netflix, including the comedy Murder Mystery, which Netflix reports almost 31 million people watched.

Uncut Gems is still a ways off from a nationwide release, coming to theaters on December 25, 2019.
