Twitch Interactive replaces Justin.tv as parent company name-May 2024

Twitch today announced that Twitch Interactive, Inc. is replacing Justin.tv, Inc. as the company’s corporate umbrella name. Justin.tv will remain as a mature product of Twitch Interactive. The name change comes off of Twitch's continued growth, seeing now more than one million monthly active broadcasters and averaging 13 billion minutes watched per month.

The decision to rename the company was based on the growth of Twitch, which in a recent 2013 retrospective saw statistics of over 45 million unique viewers per month and 6,000,000 total videos broadcast per month. 5,100 of those broadcasters are partners, and minutes watched and videos broadcast have doubled since 2012, with unique viewers up from 20 million in 2012. Twitch users watch on average 106 minutes of content per day.

League of Legends, Dota 2, and StarCraft 2 were the three most watched games on Twitch in 2013. League of Legends and Dota 2 are up 258% and 508%, respectively, in average monthly minutes watched compared to 2012.

“As Twitch has continued to grow as the leader of the video game streaming space, it has eclipsed our previous initiatives. Given our total focus on serving the gaming community it makes sense to reposition it as our primary brand,” said Emmett Shear, CEO and Founder of Twitch. “Seven years ago, Justin.tv pioneered live video on the Web, and while I remain proud of all the work we did under that name, I'm even more excited about our new future as Twitch."

Twitch attributes the latest growth in broadcasters and popularity to its integration into the launch of the PlayStation 4, with 20% of its broadcasters being PS4 owners less than two months after the console's launch. Twitch expects another large infusion of broadcasters with the upcoming integration into the Xbox One. Twitch said in early January that integration into the Xbox One is still at least a few months away.

According to top analysts, Twitch has secured a significant place in the live streaming movement. Last week it was revealed by DeepField technologies that Twitch is the fourth largest site in the United States for peak Internet traffic, ahead of Internet giants Hulu, Facebook, Amazon, and game developer Valve.

"It's wonderful validation that Twitch is now officially playing in the big leagues. Apple, Hulu, Valve, Netflix, Amazon and the like are awesome company to keep", Twitch's VP of Marketing Matthew DiPietro told onGamers. "Of course this is something our engineers have known for some time, since they are actively scaling our infrastructure to meet the intense demand growth curve. We're laser-focused on that which is no small task!"

Twitch's 2013 report says they reach more viewers per week than the viewership of Breaking Bad, Tosh.O, and the NFL Pre-season combined. Twitch also boasts that it's users consume more content on the site on average than those of Hulu, MTV, and Vevo.

"Twitch has taken the lead in live streaming by attracting users on PS4, which is only going to become more solidified when Twitch broadcasting is available on Xbox One," said Michael Pachter, video game analyst at Wedbush Securities. "The first mover advantage on these consoles is a real one, as it will be difficult for Twitch competitors to get users to switch."

Jesse Divnich, Vice President of Insights at EEDAR adds, "Twitch has broken down significant technical barriers by enabling gamers to share their experiences in a live and interactive fashion with millions around the world. Because this type of virality can't be bought, it makes it extremely valuable for publishers and one of the more influential sources of awareness and purchase intent."

Twitch.tv launched in beta on June 6, 2011.
