The continuing saga of SubSpace reveals another twist in the road.
A Westwood spokesperson confirmed a much-talked-about rumor - that it was in the early conceptual stages of game development for a title based on Paramount's Star Trek: Voyager license.
True as that rumor now proves to be - game development has stopped. That license, originally held by Virgin Interactive, has reverted to the new Star Trek licensee, Activision. After the demise of Virgin's US operations, Westwood and EA bought out several of Virgin's US properties and assumed that Virgin's limited Star Trek license would transfer to Westwood. Apparently, Activision's latest licensing deal superceded Virgin's older deal, and the license was pulled (back from Westwood). Therefore the Star Trek: Voyager project has been scrapped.
Earlier, GameSpot News reported that the SubSpace team was working on a concept for a new title based on the Voyager license. A Westwood spokesperson confirmed that using the SubSpace engine was a possibility for the project but without the Voyager license - the game concept was killed.
So what's happened to the remaining members of the SubSpace team? Westwood says that the team is now working on several projects for the company.
