Original Fast & Furious Returning to Theaters for One Day Only
Original Fast & Furious Returning to Theaters for One Day Only-May 2024
May 1, 2025 6:42 AM

Here's something that may make you feel old: the first Fast and Furious movie came out 15 years ago next month. To celebrate the anniversary, Universal is bringing the action movie back to theaters on June 22 for a one-day event.

Around 1,500 theaters across the US will show the film on that date, which is 15 years to the day after the film opened back in 2001. You can see a list of participating theaters and buy tickets at Fandango right now.

"All of us who make the Fast and Furious movies know we are part of a family that spreads all around the world, and we are happy to invite our fans to revisit where it all began back on the big screen," series producer Neal H. Moritz said in a statement. "While we are hard at work making No. 8, we are thankful to take this moment and celebrate the original that started us off."

As Deadline reminds us, The Fast and the Furious, as it was called, was something of a surprise hit. The movie's leads--including Vin Disel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Paul Walker--were not exactly big stars at the time.

The film was a hit, earning $40 million and reaching the No. 1 spot for its US opening. It went on to make $144.5 million in the US and $207.3 million worldwide. Numerous sequels followed, and altogether, the series has made $3.9 billion at the box office.

Fast & Furious 8, the latest entry in the franchise, opens in April 2017. It will be the first film in the series without Walker, who died in a 2013 car crash.

Last week, the first image of Charlize Theron's Fast & Furious 8 character was released. Theron will play a character called Cipher, who Universal claims will be the franchise's "greatest adversary ever."

In other news, it's been reported that a Fast & Furious spinoff featuring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is under consideration.
