One of Sweden's largest political party blames students' poor performances on video games-May 2024

This article was originally published on GameSpot's sister site onGamers.com, which was dedicated to esports coverage.

Moderaterna's (the leading political party in Sweden) educational policy spokesperson Tomas Tobé (pictured left) today told TV4, one of the biggest national TV stations in Sweden, that they are looking at young students', primarily young males, lack of academical results are due to an excessive amount of time spent in front of their PCs/TVs.

Tobé cites that more than a third of males who are attending school are spending a total of three hours or more on video games per day, and that this is something which won't help the Swedish school results going forward.

Pontus Eskilsson, Director of Sweden's largest esports community FragBite has adressed the statement provided by Tobé in an editorial of his own, and has also been kind enough to provide onGamers with a statement surrounding his outburst:

I think it's important for people, especially parents - to understand that gaming actually isn't bad! As I wrote in the article I've got gaming to thank for everything in my life. My job. My friends. My ex-girlfriends and so on! There are so many good people out there, living and working with games - everybody's got their own story.

The young director also went on to say Sweden has always historically been on the forefront of technological advancements, and said that youth therefore finding a fascination towards the digital entertainment format isn't surprising at all.

Sweden is one of the biggest gaming countries in the world. We are early adapters. We've got great broadband connection. I mean.. we have around 100,000 unique Swedish visitors on fragbite each week. The interest for gaming is HUGE in Sweden. I don't think Mr. Tobé knows this. He should do some research.

Aside from Eskilsson, the statements issued by Moderaterna has also been critized internally by Klas Vestergren, head of the party's youth section Moderat Skolungdom who says that the statements issued by Tobé "miss the mark" of what is actually wrong within the Swedish school system, and cites that the lack of guidance provided by the schools as a greater cause for alarm, rather than playing video games as a hobby.

Vestergren concludes his piece with the following quote: "The Swedish school stands infront of great challenges. To paint video/computer games as the main cause for them is naïve and incorrect as the issues with our schools are rooted in the absolute fundamentals."
