Unlike the real world, the NHL will continue in 2005, at least in video games. EA Sports today announced the development of NHL 06 for Xbox, PS2, GameCube, and PC as well as the cover star of the game: Tampa Bay Lighting center Vincent Lecavalier. No word yet on whether Lecavalier will be wearing a Lightning jersey and carrying a stick on the cover, or wearing a Gucci suit and carrying a briefcase.
New tweaks to the game include a skill stick (which sounds similar to the defensive hit stick in last year's Madden or the new breakout control stick in this year's NCAA Football 06), plus some new on-ice moves.
I guess it's nice to see that, despite the lockout, EA is continuing the series and it will be interesting to see if E3 yields any new puck game news from the likes of 2K Sports and Midway, but I can't help but wonder if the current state of the NHL just completely nullifies this news. Had this been a normal hockey season, we'd be right in the middle of the playoffs. As it stands now, a lot of people don't even realize they're gone.
