Kick-Ass Director Matthew Vaughn Wants To Reboot Star Wars (And Luke Skywalker)-May 2024
May 15, 2025 10:53 PM

There is one possibly controversial way Kick-Ass and Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn would sign on for a new Star Wars movie: rebooting the original. The filmmaker stated that if he was going to explore a galaxy far, far away, he wants to focus on the characters he cherishes.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (and spotted by Variety), Vaughn was asked by host Josh Horowitz about his interest in tackling a Star Wars movie. The director responded by saying he'd want "to play with the characters I loved. So if they said to me we'll... reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo, and Vader and you do your version of it--everyone would say you're an idiot to try--but that would excite me."

When Horowitz theorized that fans would have their pitchforks out for Vaughn if he rebooted Star Wars, he asked how it's any different than recasting James Bond or Wolverine. He also believes "Star Wars is the Skywalker family. And that's where I think they've gone wrong."

Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars films are in development at Star Wars Celebration this year. Reportedly the movie starring Rey Skywalker (portrayed by Daisy Ridley) will come first, with the other projects by directors Dave Filoni and James Mangold arriving afterward. So technically, the Skywalker story will continue.

As for Vaughn, his next project is the spy thriller Argylle, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, and Catherine O'Hara. Vaughn is directing the film, which will premiere in theaters February 2. Afterward, Argylle will become available to stream on Apple TV+.

Vaughn is also working on a King's Man sequel that takes on Hitler, though he's unsure if it will be a feature film or TV series.
