The Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA) has announced that it is working on getting game publishers and retailers to agree on a smaller game-box size and shape. This new format would not only reduce inconveniently irregular box shapes, but it would also decrease the amount of space each game takes up on retail shelves. This may help counter recent industry trends in retail that tend to squeeze smaller publishers off the shelves.
Hal Halpin, president of the IEMA, said, "This new format has very few downsides: It's more environmentally friendly, it's cheaper to manufacture and ship, it makes for enhanced merchandising at the store level, and it's identifiable."
IEMA is an organization that was recently founded to represent the major retailers in the games market. It hopes to make significant progress on this issue at an upcoming summit including executives from Infogrames, Activision, Electronic Arts, and Interplay.
