Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson's classic role-playing game books will be released as games for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable.
"OK, there's the Sorcery! Now where's the sword?"
The game books were originally published by Puffin Books in the 1980s, beginning with The Warlock of Firetop Mountain in 1982. There were 59 books in the main set, and spin-offs included the Sorcery! series.
They were similar to the Choose Your Own Adventure books, but included some Dungeons & Dragons elements, as well, including having to periodically roll dice to determine the outcome of a battle. The books' sales totalled more than 15 million worldwide in 26 different languages. The series was recently relaunched in the UK by Icon Books.
Ian Livingstone, who is now product acquisition director at Eidos, said, "We believe that players will really enjoy the adventures in a new way on DS and PSP. Fighting Fantasy's interactive structure is ideal for bite-sized chunks of gameplay which is important for these devices."
This is not the first time Eidos has brought the Fighting Fantasy series to gaming. The 1998 PlayStation and PC 3D action game Deathtrap Dungeon was based on the Livingstone-penned Fighting Fantasy book of the same name.
