Two weeks ago, Irrational Games lifted the veil on BioShock Infinite, a new installment in the franchise ostensibly set in the clouds. But for fans still interested in marine life over the avian kind, 2K today announced the release date and price for BioShock 2's latest piece of downloadable content.
Gamers will be able to enter the Minerva's Den downloadable content on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 simultaneously on August 31 for $9.99 (800 Microsoft points). The content was promised for PC gamers when it was announced at the beginning of the month, but according to 2K, it will arrive "at a later date" for that crowd. Here comes another new Big Daddy.
As for the content, Minerva's Den is set in Rapture Central Computing and will feature a raft of new features alongside the new narrative. 2K promises "new high-tech weaponry," as well as a new plasmid, the genetic modifications found in the BioShock universe. These powers can be unleashed on new, more powerful splicers and an all-new Big Daddy, according to the publisher. Upgraded security bots were also promised.
BioShock 2 was released in February and swiftly sold more than 3 million units in its first month. The game was followed by two pieces of multiplayer-focused DLC--the Rapture Metro Pack and the Sinclair Solutions Test Pack. One piece of single-player DLC, the Protector Trials, came out on August 3.
Minerva's Den is the first content pack to expand the main narrative or introduce new solo environments, as the Protector Trials were a series of challenges set in maps based on locations found in the main game.
Minerva's Den is currently in development at 2K Marin, the development studio that handled the single-player component of BioShock 2. For more on the franchise, check out GameSpot's review of BioShock 2. You need a javascript enabled browser to watch videos.
