DmC

Vergil was revealed, and a demonic news anchor boss battle was shown.

Dante isn't the only Devil May Cry alum getting an overhaul in the upcoming franchise reboot, DmC. At this year's Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany, Capcom unveiled that the demon hunter's twin, Vergil, will be fighting alongside him on his journey.

While Dante doesn't mind looking like a butt-kicking hipster, Vergil's new look is a little more sophisticated. Vergil's visually iconic elements--a fancy overcoat, slicked-back hair, and his signature sword--are all present, but they're presented in a more modern style. However, it's his relationship with Dante that's most interesting. While traditionally portrayed as a villain, Vergil will now be fighting alongside his sibling against a common foe.

It will be interesting to see how developer Ninja Theory will further change, and explore, the dynamics of their relationship.

Each stage of the fight was uniquely themed around the idea that Dante is fighting a demonic television network. While Vergil's reveal was the headline announcement, what really got us excited was the news anchor boss battle demonstrated after. This outrageous encounter saw Dante platforming across an interactive Raptor News title screen, swordfighting with the giant head of a demonic news anchor, and finally being ridiculed on "live" television by the anchor for being a "terrorist" and "sexual deviant."

The presentation of this encounter was very creative. From the anchor's oversized head half-obscured by news feeds, to the "live" television combat segment, each stage of the fight was uniquely themed around the idea that Dante is fighting a demonic television network. Unfortunately, the brief demonstration did not afford us time to study the mechanics of this fight. Hopefully it will play as well as it looks.

Remember Me

New third-person, memory-modifying action game from Dontnod Entertainment and Capcom.

The digital memory economy is alive and well in the not-too-distant future of Remember Me. This third-person action game from developer Dontnod Entertainment joins the increasingly crowded cyberpunk setting and focuses on memory modification.

High-profile memories, such as the President's celebration on election night, can fetch a pretty penny. In brief, memories can be bought, sold, and experienced by anyone willing to fork over the dough. High-profile memories, such as the President's celebration on election night, can fetch a pretty penny, but there is a more sinister side to this system. We saw this in action when Nilin, our heroine, was tasked with assassinating Frank Forlan, a military commander. Instead of killing Forlan outright, Nilin tapped into a potent memory: the night his wife left him. By remixing this memory, Nilin could change certain aspects of it, such as whether a bottle was knocked over or whether the safety on Forlan's gun was off.

By selecting the latter, we successfully modified the commander's memory to make him believe he accidentally shot his soon-to-be ex-wife in the chest. The sudden guilt of this crime, coupled with the forthcoming political ramifications, was enough to turn Forlan to suicide. Mission accomplished.

When Nilin wasn't hacking memories, she was darting through the city of Neo-Paris. The way she ran, shimmied along edges, and hopped over obstacles was very reminiscent of the free-form movement in the Assassin's Creed series. Group combat was familiar as well, with Nilin focusing in on one target and counterattacking those who attempted to interrupt her.

Remember Me is coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in May of 2013.

The Rest

Lost Planet 3, Resident Evil 6, and others had a presence at this press conference.

The demonstration of Lost Planet 3 included a new enemy type, dubbed fire wasps, that attacked in swarms with projectile attacks. A grappling arm for the rig (the game's giant robot suits) was also shown, and it could be used in combat to squash far-away enemies or to navigate the environment.

Resident Evil 6's time was mostly spent introducing ResidentEvil.Net, an upcoming hub page for Resident Evil 6 owners. This site will track your progress in the RE6 campaign, post your high scores in the Mercenaries challenge mode, and include unlockable, in-game rewards (such as costumes) for completing challenges. It's similar in concept to the weekend multiplayer events in Mass Effect 3.

Unfortunately for fighting fans, there were no announcements of note. Ono-san made an appearance in his seemingly permanent Blanka costume and thanked everyone for helping support 25 years of Street Fighter, and the numerous features of Street Fighter X Tekken Vita were reviewed.

Even though Capcom's press conference is finished, there's still plenty of time during Gamescom proper for the developer to surprise us. We'll be sure to keep you updated with all the latest as the show continues. Stay tuned.
