Although director Ridley Scott spent over 30 years away from the Alien series, he is the filmmaker most associated with the franchise. Scott made the original 1979 movie, and more recently the prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. The latter film was a box office disappointment, but Scott still believes there are still more movies to come.
In an interview with the LA Times, Scott spoke about how he would approach another Alien film. "I still think there's a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you'll have to now re-evolve," he said. "What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That's the thing to question--who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think."

Now Playing: How Alien Changed Sci-Fi Movies Forever | Alien 40th Anniversary
Prior to the release of Alien: Covenant in 2017, Scott had spoken about his plans for the next film, even suggesting that it would be titled Alien: Awakening. However, after Covenant made a relatively disappointing $240 million worldwide, he subsequently admitted that the series "has almost run out."
The Alien franchise is now owned by Disney, following the purchase of Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. It's unknown what Disney plans to do with the series, particularly as the content of the Alien movies are a lot more mature than the studio traditionally releases.
