Watch This Rare Star Wars Teaser Trailer That Resurfaced After 24 Years-May 2024
May 1, 2025 7:46 AM

The Academy responsible for the Oscars has released a teaser for Star Wars: Revenge of the Jedi that was made before George Lucas switched the title to "Return of the Jedi." Until now, it was only ever seen by people who saw a back-to-back re-release of A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back in the United Kingdom in 1982.

The trailer doesn't have any scenes from Return of the Jedi, instead opting for stills. It is, however, an interesting look at how teaser trailers were made in the '80s. You can check it out for yourself in the video below.

The Academy wrote in an article that the trailer recently came into its possession, though it doesn't specify how they got it or who gave it to them. The teaser contains both the original name and what ended up being an incorrect release date. It says "For the Christmas of 1983," though Return of the Jedi released in the first half of 1983.

According to the Academy, there were internal discussions about releasing the movie closer to Christmas in the United Kingdom. This would have allowed props and costumes from Return of the Jedi to be available for display in UK department stores during the movie's showing. However, it was ultimately decided that the film would release in the UK on June 2, a week after the US release of May 25.

You can check out the whole article over on the Oscars website. It contains some cool promotional art for both The Empire Strikes Back and the renamed Revenge of the Jedi.

In related news, the key art for Star Wars Celebration Europe was recently revealed. It features the casts of both The Force Awakens and this year's Rogue One, and it gives us our first clear look at the new shoretrooper.

You can check out the first Rogue One trailer here, and see GameSpot's reactions here. And you can make sure you caught every little detail with GameSpot's breakdown of everything you may have missed in the trailer.
