Trine 4 Devs Admit Past Mistakes in Fresh-Footage-Packed Making-Of Video
May 20, 2024 5:12 AM

Earlier this year Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince was announced, and response from fans was somewhat measured. Trine 3’s move to 3D wasn’t well received, and series developer Frozenbyte hast turned in some so-so games like Shadwen and Has-Been Heroes since. Thankfully, it seems Frozenbyte realizes they’ve made missteps, and are dedicated to making Trine 4 the best game it can be. Get some new Trine 4 footage and a look at Frozenbyte’s operation in the making-off featurette, below.

Here’s what Frozenbyte vice president Joel Kinnunen had to say about the studio’s past mistakes and hopes for Trine 4…

With Trine 3, we maybe got a little bit ambitious and went full 3D. We underestimated the challenge that would bring. We ended up in some difficulties, both in the game itself, and in the company's financial situation. That [took] a pretty hard toll on us.

As a company, we've found that spark back. Trine 4 is going to be bigger, better, more beautiful. The most complete Trine ever. It's got a mesmerizing soundtrack, beautiful backdrops, clever puzzle design, revamped combat system, and all the things that make a Trine game really stand out.

Haven’t been keeping up with Trine 4? Here’s a rundown of the game’s key features:

Gorgeous, 2.5D landscapes. Explore uniquely designed levels in beautiful, 2.5 dimensions, from breathtaking ruins and haunted tombs to tranquil birch groves and blueberry forests.Local and online multiplayer. Play Trine 4 with up to 4 players online or in local co-op.Captivating storytelling. Follow the story of a haunted prince as you journey through magical fairytale landscapes inhabited by friendly creatures, as well as a host of nightmarish foes.Dynamic puzzle-solving. Solve puzzles – solo or with friends – that feature fire, air, light, magnets, electricity and more, with challenges tailored to the number of players.Abundant skill trees. Unlock diverse abilities and amazing new skills.Completely revamped combat system. Experience the heroes’ own bloodcurdling nightmares in boss fights featuring an enriched combat system with fresh challenges and thrilling action!Enchanting soundtrack. Enjoy a wondrous soundtrack with songs that bring life to each new environment.Trine 4 launches alongside Trine: Ultimate Collection, which will contain the new game and three predecessors one package. Ultimate Collection will also include a soundtrack, digital art book, and other goodies. The standalone version of Trine 4 costs $30, while Trine: Ultimate Collection will set you back $50.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is coming to PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch sometime this fall.
