The Matrix Resurrections is in theaters and on HBO Max as we speak, reintroducing audiences to a world they first met when the original movie hit theaters in 1999. Once more, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss), and Morpheus (now played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) are fighting their way through a virtual world in an attempt to free those essentially being held captive. After this movie, though, what does the future hold?

Now Playing: Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss Talk The Matrix Return

Given that the original Matrix spawned two sequels, it's only natural to wonder if that's the territory we have wandered into once more. After all, given how the movie ends it seems more of the story needs to be told.

As the film wraps, we see both Neo and Trinity have fully embraced the power they wield together. In a scene that plays similarly to the end of the original film, the two of them fly off into the skies above San Francisco together after promising to free the minds of those held captive. Is the cast ready to be plugged back into the Matrix, though?

"Absolutely," Reeves told GameSpot. "I would love it." Moss added, "Lana Wachowski is such a creative human being. It's so exciting to read and be a part of anything that she creates."

It's not just Reeves and Moss that want to dig deeper into the story and their characters, though. Abdul-Mateen has just scratched the surface on his version of Morpheus--which he made sure to differentiate from Laurence Fishburne's portrayal.

"I'll say that I think that this character, you know, he's on a journey of exploration," he explained. "What I can say is that he is stepping into his own and he's figuring out who he is and how he wants to exist in the world. I think that once he finds that solid hold, I think that there's definitely an opportunity to explore now what that means for him."

Still, while he's excited to expand on his portrayal of Morpheus even more in a potential sequel, Abdul-Mateen is most concerned with now with the world seeing what they've created with Resurrections.

"I'm excited to put what we have right now out into the world to let the fans react to that," he said." And then anything that happens after that, you know, you leave that to the gods and you cross that bridge when you get to it, but I'm really excited for what we do have right now."

The Matrix Resurrections is in theaters and on HBO Max now. In his review of Resurrections, Chris E. Hayner said the film "seemingly gives a window into the mind of Lana Wachowski as she embarks on resurrecting the most notable creation of her career. While it may not be nearly as good as the original Matrix, you shouldn't be surprised to find yourself thinking about it weeks after your first viewing, wondering why it's sticking with you so much."
