Summer of the 60GB and Blu-ray 360s?
Summer of the 60GB and Blu-ray 360s?-June 2024
Jun 27, 2025 11:35 AM

  Source: British tech site Trustedreviews.com.

What we heard: When the Xbox 360 Pro went on sale in November 2005, its 20GB hard drive was more than adequate to hold every Xbox Live Arcade game on the market with plenty of space to spare.

However, over the past two and a half years, Microsoft has released a bevy of content for the console: Xbox Live Marketplace currently contains thousands of gigabytes of themes, gamer pics, demos, arcade titles, expansion packs, downloadable content, television shows, and high- and standard-definition movies. As a result, standard 360 owners are left with two extreme options: micromanage their 20GB drives or pony up for a $179 120GB drive or a $449 Xbox 360 elite.

In light of the obvious demand for a midrange storage add-on, Trustedreviews' rumor of a 60GB makes perfect sense. The site claims that "Microsoft WILL be replacing the 20GB hard drive on the standard Xbox 360 with a larger 60GB version. ...If you've been saving up for a 20GB Xbox 360, hold off. The 60GB model IS coming and you can take this exclusive to the bank..." (Emphasis in the original.) Though Trustedreviews is based in the UK, the island nation has the same 360 SKUs as the US, where a 60GB would presumably cost under $100 sold separately.

But though the 60GB rumor is attributed to a "rock solid" source (emphasis in the original...again), Trustedreviews posits a less sound hypothesis. "Interestingly, the company is also toying with the idea of introducing a new 360 SKU," it claims, before surmising, "Given that hard drive and connectivity variations are already covered, it would seem that the most logical conclusion is a model with a built-in Blu-ray drive." The site offers no further evidence to support its theory of such a rapid rollout of a drastically redesigned new 360, and makes no pretense that its "rock solid" source told it a Blu-ray-equipped edition of the PlayStation 3 archrival is in the offing.

The official story: "MDNCOROS."--A Microsoft rep, using the tried-and-true PR shorthand for "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."

Bogus or not bogus?: Given Xbox Live Marketplace's burgeoning catalog, a 60GB-equipped 360 would make sense. However, even though Microsoft has admitted to working with Blu-ray technology, Trustedreview's "logical" leap that the mystery summer SKU is Blu-ray-equipped seems like a dive into the deep end of the speculation pool. For now, anyway...
