Video games have a growing presence in Australian households, according to statistics in the Digital Report Australia 2014 released today.

　　Commissioned by the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA), information was gathered from a study of 1,220 Australian households comprised of 3,398 males and females of varying ages.

　　Of the households surveyed, nine in ten claimed to have at least one device for playing interactive games. Consoles were the video game medium of choice for 63 percent of households, and females made up 47 percent of gamers.

　　According to the study, 76 percent of gamers are over the age of 18, with the average age of gamers 32 years old. ABS census data cites the average Australian age as 37, five years away from the average age of gamers.

　　Parents also showed a strong interest in gaming, with 81 percent of mothers who play video games and 83 percent of fathers also taking part playing video games.

　　Dr. Jeff Brand, a professor at Bond University and author of the report, described the profile of the Australian gamer as "nearly synonymous with the profile of the typical Australian".
