The next chapter of StarCraft II, Legacy of the Void, will wrap up the established story of StarCraft, though it won't necessarily mark the end of the series.
Despite the long gap between the original StarCraft and StarCraft II--Wings of Liberty came out 12 years after StarCraft expansion Brood War--the new games' stories are a continuation of what started in 1998. Legacy of the Void will finally wrap things up.
"StarCraft will live on as a universe," a Blizzard spokesperson told IGN. "We hope to explore some other aspects of the universe, but the storyline that was setup in StarCraft I and continued in StarCraft II will resolve in Legacy of the Void. All of those main characters will reach a nice, satisfying conclusion."
That doesn't guarantee that StarCraft III is next up for Blizzard once it releases Legacy of the Void, but it does open up the possibilities for what such a game could be about.
Whereas the previous two StarCraft II games were each focused on the Terrans (Wings of Liberty) and Zerg (Heart of the Swarm), Legacy of the Void is centered around the Protoss.
A release date has not yet been announced, but we do know a closed beta for Legacy of the Void will kick off March 31. Blizzard plans to use the beta to test out changes to things like resources and the number of workers you start out with. The beta will initially be limited to a small number of people, but will expand over time.
