Along with the annoucement of the Sonic.TV Proleague, news also broke that SOSPA (The afreeca Brood War scene's equivalent to KeSPA) are planning on establishing a new amateur-only tournament which will let the winners qualify for the SPL seasons, effectively ressurecting the legendary Courage tournament, where amateurs competed for the chance to become a progamer. Given the huge playerbase the game had in Korea, these tournaments were considered to be ridiculously hard and made the winner's triumph of becoming an official KeSPA-licensed progamer all the sweeter.
This means that the BW scene in Korea is now moving out of the realm of consisting of only amateurs, and will now have an official distinction between amateurs and professional players once again.
Meanwhile, the Sonic.TV Proleague seems to have now become an actual tournament, and will take place alongside the individual SSL tournaments. The teams participating in the current season of the BW Proleague (1st Official SOSPA Proleague) are currently populated solely by former progamers and previous SSL participants (except for the organizer's own team, which is populated by mostly untested up-and-coming talent) and they play under the banner of their former teams. The participating teams are:
Ex-CJ Entus
Ex-MBCGame Hero
Ex-Samsung Khan
Ex-KT Rolster
Ex-STX SouL
Ex-SKT T1
Ex-Hwaseung Oz
Sonic All-Stars
Casters of the Sonic.TV Proleague will be Kim 'TheMarine' Jeong Min, one of the first successful progamers from Korea and a long-time OGN caster, as well as Park 'GoRush' Tae Min, winner of the 2004 YAtGK MSL. The pair are pictured in the article's portrait.
