Netflix's Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness Releases This Summer, Picks Up After Resident Evil 4-May 2024

Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield are getting a new story in Netflix's animated series, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and now we know when you can expect to watch it: July 2021. We also know a little more about the story the series will cover and how it fits into the greater Resident Evil timeline.

Capcom released new info about Infinite Darkness during its latest Resident Evil Showcase, where it showed a new trailer from the series and narrowed down its release window. The previous teaser for Infinite Darkness indicated that it's a story that'll feature both Resident Evil 2 protagonists, Leon and Claire, as well as more than a few zombies. During the showcase, we found out that the story will take place, at least in part, at the White House--and will feature a zombie outbreak in the highest halls of the US government.

Now Playing: Resident Evil Village Showcase (April 2021)

Infinite Darkness takes place two years after the events of Resident Evil 4. In that game, Leon, working as a Secret Service agent, ventured to an Eastern European village in search of Ashley Graham, the US president's daughter. Leon successfully rescued Ashley, uncovered a bunch of conspiracies about the Las Plagas parasites, and generally stopped some horrific monster things from engulfing the world.

When we catch up with Leon in Infinite Darkness, Ashley's father, President Graham, is still leading the country. Leon is apparently working for him in the Secret Service and serves, it seems, in the White House itself. The footage played during the showcase sees him reuniting briefly with Claire, who's also at the White House and has information she's trying to deliver. She has a drawing made by a child that depicts a scene similar to what Claire and Leon witnessed in Raccoon City, suggesting the boy might have seen something similar--and that a new threat might be looming.

It seems that threat doesn't take long to manifest in the White House itself, with Leon and the other Secret Service agents scrambling to protect President Graham. Where things go from there is anybody's guess, but the teaser trailer released in October shows Claire in a darkened house that looks like it's filled with strange vials reminiscent of the kind Umbrella previously stored its dangerous substances in, like the T-Virus. It looks like the zombie outbreak in the White House is just part of the story, and the investigation might take Claire and Leon in different directions.

The Resident Evil Showcase was a wealth of information about the franchise. It dropped new details about Resident Evil Village, including a new trailer and details about upcoming demos, and the return of The Mercenaries mode when the game launches on May 7. Capcom also announced that Resident Evil 4 is coming to virtual reality on the Oculus Quest 2, and teased a crossover event with Dead By Daylight.
