Gloomhaven is one of the most successful board games of the past few years, selling more than 200,000 copies since its initial Kickstarter run in 2017, and now it's getting a sequel. Creator Isaac Childres first unveiled the Kickstarter for Frosthaven on March 31, and it received more than $1.5 million in pledges over the first hour, more than three times its funding goal.

　　According to an interview with our sister site CNET, Frosthaven's Kickstarter campaign was delayed for a month due to the coronavirus pandemic. The sequel will offer even more complexity than its predecessor, with city-building sub-systems and a renewed focus on surviving the frigid northern climes.

　　When asked about why he returned to Kickstarter for the sequel despite the mammoth success of Gloomhaven, Childres cited his need to gauge demand before production. "We are a successful brand at this point, but I'm still not at all sure about how many copies of this sequel that I should print," Childres told CNET. "We sold over 200,000 copies of Gloomhaven. Should I print that many? If only 10,000 people want the game and I print 200,000, that's a disaster."

　　For fans of the famously-complex Gloomhaven, the sequel appears to offer more of the same tactical crunchiness. If you aren't interested in buying the $140 twenty-pound physical version from Amazon, you can check out a version of the tabletop game on Tabletop Simulator, or buy the official digital adaptation on Steam.
