Actor Nick Offerman was cast as Bill for HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, back in December of 2021, replacing Con O'Neill (The Batman, Our Flag Means Death) who had to pull out for scheduling conflicts.
In the trailer for next week's episode, we get our first complete look at Bill and the minefield of traps he has set up in his home in Lincoln, Massachusetts to ward off runners and other infected. In the game, in order to meet him, you have to cross his traps, where you eventually learn that Bill owes Joel a list of favors for an unspecified reason.

The other big thing they touch on in the trailer is Bill's backstory with Frank, his partner. At some point after the outbreak, Bill and Frank were the only survivors living in Lincoln, after it became populated by a huge number of infected. Eventually, though, Frank left Bill on his own and disappeared.
With his mechanical and trap-making skills, Bill helps Joel craft unique weapons to use against all types of infected. In the game, it's how you get the nail bomb to use against bloaters, which you can briefly see as a maquette in the background when prosthetics designer Barrie Gower talks about making sure the clickers look right for the series.
Episode 3 of HBO's The Last of Us premieres on January 29.
