D&D: Honor Among Thieves Expected To Have Slow Start At The Box Office This Weekend-May 2024

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves releases in theaters this weekend, but does it have enough steam to dethrone John Wick: Chapter 4? According to Deadline, it isn't tracking for a very massive opening weekend. The site said the fantasy film starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez is expected to earn between $30 million-$40 million in the US over its first weekend.

That's not a huge number, the site reported, especially when you consider the film carried a $150 million production budget before marketing expenses are factored in. Working in the film's favor, though, is its strong review scores--it currently boasts a 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% score from viewers who saw it early. On GameSpot sister site Metacritic, Honor Among Thieves has a 71 metascore.

Another element helping Honor Among Thieves, at least on paper, is the film's star power. In addition to Pine and Rodriguez, it features Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, and Hugh Grant.

John Wick: Chapter 4 will be the biggest hurdle that Honor Among Thieves will need to overcome to win the weekend. The Keanu Reeves movie is expected to make $30 million over its second weekend, so it should be a tight race between the two films for the top spot of the weekend.

Thursday screenings for Honor Among Thieves begin today, March 30, at 3 PM in the US and Canada. The movie will of course also release in international markets, where it's expected to earn at least $25 million over its first weekend. If Honor Among Thieves reaches the high end of its US and international targets, it could earn $65 million or more after its first weekend--which would mean it will need additional strong weekends to cover its reported $150 million production budget.

Honor Among Thieves is not the first D&D movie. 2000's Dungeons & Dragons, which stars Jeremy Irons, was a box office bomb, earning $34 million worldwide. A TV movie, Wrath of the Dragon God, was released in 2005, though it did not feature the same cast.
