Atari VCS, the new “retro-inspired” console from the company that started it all, is now available for pre-order. For whatever reason, Atari is handling the pre-orders via an Indiegogo campaign, which immediately blew past its $100,000 goal – as if this writing, the campaign has raised $1.7 million from approximately 6400 backers. You can check out a new trailer, below.
Two models are being offered for pre-order – here’s the rundown for both:
Pre-orders are open for the Atari VCS Day One Collector’s Edition featuring a special retro-inspired real wood-front, and the sleek Atari VCS Onyx, with its glossy black face and searing “Atari Red” illuminated Fuji logo. The Day One Collector’s Edition is $299 USD, exclusive to Indiegogo, and only available for a limited time. The Atari VCS Onyx is priced at $199 USD, also for a limited time. Atari’s reimagined Classic Joystick and the all-new Modern Controller are available for purchase in select packages or as standalone purchases.
While it may have a nostalgic look, and comes packed with over 100 classic games, the Atari VCS is being touted as a modern entertainment device. The system will have a Linux-based operating system, and will support 4K, HDR, and 60fps content.
Pre-orders for the Atari VCS will only be open for a limited time – you have until June 4 at 9am PT to pre-order the Onyx model, and June 11 at 9am to get the wood-paneled Collector’s Edition. Here's that pre-order link again. The system will launch sometime in mid-2019.
What do you think? Does the Atari VCS strike your fancy? The price isn’t that bad, and the systems are certainly stylish, I’m just not sure what niche they fill. But hey, if I had unlimited funds to spend on cool-looking electronics, I certainly wouldn’t mind adding one to my entertainment unit.
