Xbox Live Usage Spikes As People Stay Home During Coronavirus Outbreak-May 2024
May 11, 2025 11:30 AM

Microsoft's online gaming network, Xbox Live, is experiencing increased demand as people stay home from work and school amid concerns around the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed this in a tweet, saying Xbox Live "usage is up on almost everything." He went on to thank his operations and IT teams, and those working for "all the companies" that supply online services at this time.

Given how many workplaces and schools are closed due to the virus outbreak, it makes sense that internet usage overall would increase, and this includes gaming.

It hasn't been entirely smooth sailing, however, as Xbox Live went down again recently, presumably due to an influx of users. In another tweet, Spencer said he's been in awe of the stories he's heard about how people are playing games to stay connected with their friends, even if they can't visit them in person due to "social distancing" protocols.

"Play is a fundamental human need," Spencer said. "Proud to be part of an industry that can offer escape and fun right now. Stay safe."

It's heartening to hear from so many people using gaming as a way to stay connected during these times. Play is a fundamental human need. Proud to be part of an industry that can offer escape and fun right now. Stay safe. https://t.co/1TOjzYLHeD

Presumably PlayStation Network and Nintendo Switch Online are also experiencing increased demand for a similar reason.

In related news, a number of high-profile in-person competitive gaming tournaments, including the League of Legends LCS, Overwatch League, and Call of Duty League, have been either canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
