Last night, Sony took the wraps off of its Next Generation Portable (NGP), the successor to the PSP. The powerful portable hogged the limelight at the show, with Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Kaz Hirai showing off first-party games such as Uncharted and Little Deviants. Also on hand were third-party developers offering NGP support, including reps from Epic, Konami, Tecmo Koei, and Activision--the last of which promised a new Call of Duty game.
Original PlayStation games are coming to Android devices via PlayStation Suite.
However, Sony also announced another initiative at its event, PlayStation Suite. The new program will extend the PlayStation experience beyond the PSP--and now NGP--by providing PlayStation content on Android mobile devices and tablets in order to "add a wide variety of devices to the PlayStation family." As of November 2010, Android devices made up 25.8 percent of the smartphone market, according to the Nielsen Company.
PlayStation Suite will be brought to Android devices via a new "PlayStation Certified" licensing program for hardware manufacturers. The program will have Sony provide development support as well as logo licensing to "ensure the delivery of PlayStation quality experience across various devices."
According to Hirai, the goal of PlayStation Suite is to make PlayStation content available to more users and give developers and publishers more options. The first batch of PlayStation Suite content is expected before the end of the year and will initially be original PlayStation games. Though no specific titles were mentioned, Sony did say it is readying a special PlayStation Store that will allow Android users to download PlayStation Suite content directly onto their devices.
New PlayStation Suite content will also be available on NGP systems. For more on the NGP and PlayStation Suite, check out GameSpot's liveblog of the Tokyo press conference, or watch it directly via the video embedded below.
