Certain things synergize together to earn more points, so placement is everything! What's the point of a church if there's no people nearby? Or a wood cutter with no trees? Create the best layout you can to earn the most points!
Build thriving towns and fertile farmland but be sure to keep your citizens out of the way of danger!
