'Consider the Consequences'', originally published in 1930 was written by Doris Webster and Mary Alden Hopkins and is the earliest known published work of fiction that offers branching paths. This style of fiction would go on to give rise to Choose Your Own Adventure books, Infocom text adventure games, and of course, the incredibly popular field of modern Interactive Fiction.
The text comes from a digitized copy uploaded to Archive.org. The porting of the game to TWINE is done by me, Gregory Theriot - professional enthusiast, amateur everything else.
I first learned about this book from this post on intfiction.org, which in turn points to Jason Dyer's post on Renga in Blue on a history of Gamebooks as a point of inspiration. In short, I didn't discover nuttin', but man I'm glad they did.
I will cop to not having played this yet or really know what it's about. When I first heard about the existence of this gamebook, I knew I wanted to play it, but flipping through a PDF? no magic, my friend. So I went ahead and tried baby's first Twine project (and man, somebody else working out the story and you just implementing it? *chef's kiss* no notes.) The text is from an OCR'd pdf from archive.org and while putting this together I did some cleanup but I'm sure there's still messes in there because, well, I haven't read it yet.
